Our Mandate
To build an apartment and townhouse - housing complex of 96 units that will not only house, but be both a home and a community for tenants of mixed income, age, and family size. The complex, on a key central-city property, will make a positive quality statement for the area.
Our Building
The Abbey, designed with quality features by local architect Peter MacKenzie, respects and celebrates the rich heritage at the heart of Saint John . The building has been designed with quality in mind, includes in-floor heating, modern soundproofing and underground parking.
Our History
The land the complex is built on is adjacent to the historic church, St. Andrew and St. David on Germain St. , first built by Scots Presbyterians in the early 19th century.
After the Great Fire of Saint John (1877) that original wooden church burned to the ground. Within a year a new Gothic Revival brick and stone Hall and Sanctuary were rapidly built. Over the following years the church trustees acquired the land behind the church at the corner of Duke and Charlotte streets for the use of the congregation and the community.
The church's congregation, now part of the United Church of Canada, undertook the development of Abbey St. Andrew Inc. It has been proud to watch the Abbey's rise.
